Universities restructuring their language training programs
Across Europe, universities have been scaling back or closing their language programs, a trend with far-reaching effects for students and researchers. Our project maps these developments to understand where and why they happen, and how they impact diversity in language education.
Through our survey, conducted over the past year, we gathered insights from staff across many European institutions of Higher Education. Their experiences shed light on the causes of closures, the strategies universities use to cope, and the consequences for language learning and teaching. If your institution has not yet contributed or if you have news of programs that are closing (or opening) in the future, we warmly invite you to add this information to our survey.
Here you can find the slides from our SLE autumn lecture (on November 27th, 2025).
